UChicago Medicine Center for Care and Discovery Hospital

Healthcare

Project overview

Air Design Systems, Inc. designed, fabricated, and installed more than two million pounds of ventilation ductwork for the University of Chicago Medicine Center for Care and Discovery, a 1.2-million-square-foot hospital built to support some of the most advanced patient care in the region.

Located on Chicago’s South Side, the Center for Care and Discovery is one of the largest buildings on the University of Chicago campus. The hospital spans the north end of two city blocks along 57th Street between Cottage Grove and Drexel Avenues, with approximately 100,000 square feet of space on each floor.

The facility includes 240 single-occupancy inpatient rooms, 52 intensive care beds, and space for 28 advanced operating rooms. It also features an integrated diagnostic and interventional platform serving cardiac, gastrointestinal, neurological, and vascular specialties, along with two floors dedicated to future expansion and evolving medical technologies.

Air Design Systems’ role extended well beyond fabrication and installation. As a WBE contractor, ADS led the project’s BIM Partnership Center for more than 55 weeks from its facility, supporting coordination across a highly complex healthcare project. Air Design Systems was also recognized by the Gilbane/O’Neil Joint Venture for outstanding safety performance throughout construction.
