The 83,440 gross square foot, 5-story renovation of the Searle Chemistry Building includes state-of-the-art dedicated research space for 5 principal investigators and approximately 60 graduate students, core instrumentation suites for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mass Spectrometry, and administrative offices for the Department of Chemistry.
The building also provides 1-1/2 floors of office, research laboratories and conference space for the Computation Institute. CI is an interdisciplinary research center jointly established by the University and Argonne National Laboratory to study large scale application of computation, data, and communications.
The renovation eliminated an estimated $20 million in deferred maintenance backlogs and plant adaption and renewal costs. It includes substantial exterior work and interior reconfiguration including the creation of a new canopied accessible entrance on Ellis Avenue and a two-story entry lobby. The energy and resource saving features of the building earned the University its first LEED Gold certification for a research building.
